Your Portfolio In Focus (BBC) - Deadline: Ongoing
Have you been to an unusual event? Do you want to shed light on a subject or place that you are interested in, or would you just like to show off your best pictures?

If so then we want you to send us between eight and 10 photographs with captions for presentation as a gallery on the In Pictures page.

==

Photos:

Ideally, you should aim to take a variety of photographs - it’s a good idea to plan the story before you start. A good first photo would be one that introduces the subject to the readers.

Make sure you take some close-up photos as well as some wider pictures to show the subject’s environment, but remember to include something in the foreground to add impact.

When you take the picture, remember to look up or down to see what is around you. You might get a better shot if you kneel, or find a position to look down from.

The completed photo essay will have no more than 10 photographs, but you can send us more to choose from.

Make sure you have permission from anyone pictured before submitting the photographs.

Words:

Each picture will need a caption.

Who, what, why, where and when is a good place to start when gathering information for the caption, but where possible quotes from those pictured and a description of how you are feeling will help bring the essay to life.

We don’t need many words - no more than 40 per picture.

How to submit a picture

If you think you have an interesting set of photographs, send it to the BBC News website

If you want to e-mail it to us, send it to yourpics@bbc.co.uk

Don’t forget to include your name and some background information and please put “My Portfolio” in the subject heading as this will increase your chances of selection.

Digital Image Cafe Photo Of The Month - Deadline: Monthly

November 2007 theme is all about the Rule of Thirds.

The rule of thirds is a compositional rule of thumb in photography. The rule states that anlogo-v2.gif image can be divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines. The four points formed by the intersections of these lines can be used to align features in the photograph. Proponents of this technique claim that aligning a photograph with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the photo than simply centering the feature would.

Upcoming Themes (order subject to change):
Sports & Games | Old | Selective Desaturation | Kitchen | Visual Puns | Shallow Depth of Field

  • An image selected as a Photo of the Month may NOT be entered into any of our contests again, with the exception of an automatic entry into our Photo of the Quarter contest. All winning POTM images will always be available for viewing in our POTM archives.
  • You must be a member in good standing at the time any prize is awarded.
  • Prizes are awarded to all categories in our Photo of the Month contest. Certain partners have agreed to sponsor a particular category, while others leave it to our discretion. We will try and award prizes based on their value, with the more valuable prizes going to the top winners. Digital Image Cafe will not work out trades between members for prizes. Once the decision has been made and announced, it will be up to the member to negotiate a trade.

To enter you need to register for $25.00/yr

Rules are here.

==

1. Upload Your Photo to Sosauce (Instructions)
  2. If you haven’t already registered, you must create an account with Sosauce
    (click to register).
  3. To upload your photos, click on the Upload button on either the Photo Sticky in your Sosauce Home or in the left column of any page in the Photo application. Once you click on Upload, you will be presented with three options: Basic, Guided, or Fast mode. The Basic mode provides a web-based uploading tool. While not as feature rich as Guided or Fast modes, this mode can still allow you to upload multiple photos at once. Since it doesn’t require the installation of an additional upload control, it is also useful if you are behind firewalls or if you are traveling. The Guided and Fast modes are more feature rich. To use these modes, you will be prompted for a very quick, easy, and safe installation of an upload control.
  4. Tag your photo with ‘Noise’ (Instructions)
  5. You can add tags for your photos in the Describe page or in the page with a big photo and a slider.

In the Describe page, you can add tags individually by typing the tag into the textbox with the header "Tags." Or you can use the top textbox framed by a yellow background to add the same tags for all the photos in the Describe page. To do so, type in the tag names in the top textbox, and then click on the dropdown menu to the left of the textbox to select the "Add These Tags" option. Then, click on the Apply button to complete the changes. Be sure to click on Save after you are done. Note: When you are inserting multiple tags, be sure to separate them with commas.

In the page with a big photo and a slider, you can add tags by clicking on the word "Tags" with an arrow next to it; "Tags" is located just below "Photo Details." Clicking the "Photo Details" text will cause the menu to drop down, revealing the area in which you can add tags. Find the text "Click here to edit tags" and click on it (Note: when you mouse over the instructions, you will also see a blue highlight, telling you that this area is clickable). On click, a textbox would appear, and you can input your tags. Once you are done, simply hit Enter or click off the textbox to save."

  6. Make sure your photo is in a Public album (Instructions)

==

==

==

The winner of the “Funny Photos” $50 bi-weekly prize will be selected, by the FunnyPhotosContest.com Judges, from the FIVE photos receiving the most votes from website viewers.  Every few days, the results of the voting will be displayed on the “Who’s Winning” page.  At the end of each contest, the winning photo will appear on the “Winners” page.  Each September and March, the winners from the previous six months will be judged and the winner will receive a $500 bonus prize.

Australian Digital Photo Of The Day (ADPOTD) - Deadline: Monthly

The ADPOTD is selected from all the entries to the Monthly Theme categories, excluding the Featured Category, as this stands as a separate competition with it’s own prize.

Each weekday (excluding public holidays) unless otherwise noted, one image will be chosen from all category entries (excluding the Featured & International Categories) and be awarded as ADPOTD. This is a “blind” selection as the photographer’s name remains unknown during the selection process. At the end of each month unless otherwise noted, a panel of professional photographers will select one image from those displayed as ADPOTD and award it the title of Australian Digital Photo Of The Month (hereafter referred to as ADPOTM). This decision is based on all aspects of the image’s content and is final.

Images MUST be supplied at a minimum of 600 pixels on the longest side and in JPG format.
